On the whole, many of the Klingon ships in the Ship Recognition Manual appear to be inefficiently designed (a failing which also occurs with the Federation starships). Examining the ship design tables for the Klingon Empire, a number of interesting efficiency breakpoints become obvious. The ship designs in these postings are the result of some of these breakpoint experiments. There are five postings, each describing one ship. The ships are the D-27, D-33, and D-37 class cruisers, and the L-21 and L-22 class frigates. All of these ship designs are Copyright 1988 by Sean R. The D-27 mounts two KWC-3 warp engines and a KIE-3 impulse engine, giving it an unprecedented amount of available energy for this class of vessel -- more than Federation cruisers of up to twice its mass -- as well as making it extremely fast and maneuverable, capable of speeds up to Warp 9. The D-27A mounts two KD-8 disruptors on the forward command pod, and four KD-13 disruptors arranged to cover all sides of the vessel. Two KP-6 torpedos cover almost the entire field of fire, the only gap in coverage being directly aft. The D-27B is believed to be a command cruiser, having additional berthing for a command staff, and with the weaponry changed to provide better all- round fields of fire. The maximum disruptor firepower decreased with the replacement of the KD-8 disruptors by KD-13s, and the rear disruptors were changed from KD-13s to KD-9s. The KP-6 torpedos were replaced by KP-3s, and a third KP-3 was added in the aft quadrant, closing a relatively vulnerable window. With its large available power, the D-27 is exceptionally maneuverable, and is capable of powering all its weapons systems and shields to full power simultaneously, which will make this vessel a difficult opponent in combat, being able to cover itself from multiple opponents, or to maneuver rapidly against a single opponent. The class name is from the Klingonaase g'naar zad, referring to a poisonous reptile on the planet Margend, which is similar to the Terran pit vipers. Copyright 1988 by Sean R. Malloy.
