This is not really anything new, but the approach may be. The approach and the theory evolved from some 25 years of meditation and professional computer systems analysis. Nothing unusual there. The approach is based on a systems analytical approach and tends to get a bit mathematical in its precision because the theory is to prepare for the day that 'thoughts' may be precisely and physically detected, measured, etc. Based upon this assumption there is a systems approach which can be used to define 'trance' very precisely. The definition is not 'new' in that trance is merely a form of dissociation. Dissociation is also 'redefined' in a systems analytical way such that factors which give rise to dissociation are more precisely specified. It turns out that there are four types of trance. These four general types of trance include the following which are given as examples of the type: 1. televison trance, which includes hypnosis. 2. meditation 3. addiction 4. psychosis. The Trance Institute is taking the 'systems analytical' approach which is neither the neodissociative nor the social psychological approach nor the cognitive behavioral approach, and using this point of view exploring the implications. NLP seems to be a subset, and there are implications of dangerous other subsets. Specifically, it seems that trances can be 'designed' using some of this theory. Certainly if you understand how an addiction can be a trance, it could be possible to design addictions. This is chilling, to say the least. Anyway, hypnosis becomes trivial and more interesting trances such as shamanic, yogic, etc. at least become more possible as subjects for study. The Trance Institute is interested in a 'socially responsible' way to present this theory in the form of courses without feeding the monsters in our midst.
